By manipulating local environmental variables such as temperature, PH, pressure, free energy and magnetism, these devices break down intermolecular and intramolecular bonds, move molecules or atoms, and then reassociate them into new bonds. This is done with varying degrees of success based on the type of MDRD or ADRD used. The following are the different types from least to most refined:
Usage
The ADRD-V1 is intended for a wide variety of illegal purposes. In addition to the obvious benefits of reducing things to their base components, it is the perfect murder weapon, as it can turn the victim into a gas of hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. There are also instances in which it was used to quickly change the appearance of people, for example rearranging their face, shifting fat into muscle (or what looks like muscle) and vice versa. For the most part this is done without actually killing the cells by keeping them in an environment which is conducive to their living until they reach their new home.
The net is large enough to cover an area of 3m x 3m x 1.5m.
How it Works
The ADRD-V1 uses magnetic fields, temperature, pressure, and other environmental factors on a very local level to change the states and destroy or create bonds within the subject, and to move atoms or molecules to different areas of the subject, creating new structures. The laptop it is connected to is actually just a storage machine for the complex environmental changes that are required, and are computed on a much larger and more powerful computer. For example, a laptop might contain the necessary sequence for changing a subject into its component atoms, into small bricks, or into an elaborate sculpture. Sequences cannot be calculated on the laptop.
History
The ADRD series was started by a group of scientists working for an underworld lord who was obsessed by being all-powerful, and felt that this was the best way to approach god-hood, who's name is lost to history. He was basically insane. However, he died shortly after the X-ADD-2 was completed. Fortunately for the scientists (who would have probably been killed otherwise) the project was continued by his successor, Brian Steelhand. He saw the project to its completion and began actually using it. He had all but the test-type and the ADRD-V1 destroyed, and the scientists had their minds pleasantly erased ... by a 9mm. Using these two devices, he had a license to print money. Anyone who got in his way disappeared without a trace. He wasn't caught because he could actually rearrange his DNA in such a minor way as to not cause him any harm, but enough to make himself unidentifiable to any conventional means. Unfortunately for Brian, he had Dakordan del'Melechi working for him. Dakordan managed to destroy the test-type and steal the ADRD-V1, the software for programming it, and destroy the scientist's notes. Dakordan then conveniently disappeared, hid the device, and got on with his life. Brian Steelhand, without the device, was quickly killed and the device was forgotten in the ensuing competition for his kingdom. Thus, the device is hidden somewhere and few even know of its existence. Those that do mostly think it's either an exaggeration or it was destroyed. Dakordan doesn't really care for it, but he does know it can be a powerful bargaining chip in the future, and at the very least, stealing it kept Steelhand from becoming too tyrannical. Other than that, he is content to let it sit in a safety deposit box back on Mars, with the knowledge that it's safe so long as he continues payment for the box, which he does through a hack in a major bank to use a small percentage of the interest of a charity's account. Dakordan does, however, donate the exact amount removed annually from the account to the charity every year.
