Authorized, staffed, and equipped to keep all human-controlled Lattice Worlds in compliance with LWA Regulations, the RI&E is the largest single police force ever known. All current technologies for the imposition of will are used, on both planet-wide (military, or systemic) and local (police, or micro) scales. The RI&E splits into several branches:
- Inspection Arm -- Mostly inspectors, but also advisors who mandate ("suggest") methods of compliance for individual Lattice Worlds. (The information-gathering Sub-Arm of the RI&E is thought to operate from within the Inspection Arm, but its name and actual affiliation to the RI&E are unknown. RI&E officers deny that any covert espionage is necessary to carry out their duties.)
- Systemic Enforcement Arm -- Military, including the Munitions Sub-Arm and the Stratactical Applications Sub-Arm.
- Micro Enforcement Arm -- Police, including counter-terrorism and anti-crime units.
- Operations Arm -- Oversees and facilitates, in conjunction with individual Lattice Worlds, implementations to bring those Worlds into compliance with LWA regulations.
- Records Arm -- Stores and processes data regarding compliance with LWA regulations by individual worlds.
Tales of rampant cruelty and the infliction of horror by RI&E officials are so common as to have become joke-fodder ... and indeed, countless incidents of abuse of power have been recorded. However, the RI&E's spokespeople are quick to remind that power has always been abused by the agents of whomever holds that power, and also that the RI&E strives at all times to maintain fair and decent practices in its endless struggle to bring less-fortunate Lattice Worlds up to the minimum standards of living (as agreed upon by all, through the LWA) that all of HyperHumanity deserves.
