The LWA (Lattice World Authority)
Perhaps it is the ultimate expression of the human propensity to impose order upon chaos -- over even order upon order -- that we have seen fit to create a bureaucracy to oversee our presence in the Lattice. Be all that as it might, the Lattice World Authority has, for the last eight millennia and more, provided organization and a central focus for human occupation of the worlds that we have appropriated from the Lattice Builders.
Some major departments of the LWA conform directly to aspects of the Lattice Worlds themselves, while others administer more peripheral or supportive activities:
- Regulatory Inspection & Enforcement -- The dreaded RI&E police-force-and-army, whose officers enjoy authority nearly unparalleled in human history.
- Telegressor Administration Cabinet (TAC) -- Responsible for maintaining the smooth flow of traffic through the Teegs, as well as enforcing the restriction against tolls for Teeg use by local authorities.
- Direct Teeg-Asset Conservation Bureau (D-TAC) -- The security force detailed to prevent damage to Teegs (which are basically irreparable) in Lattice Worlds where the local authorities are not sufficiently trustworthy to protect their own Teegs. D-TAC operates jointly under the RI&E and TAC.
- Power Management Engineering Cabinet -- Advisory for budgeting of the energy generated by the Power Films, and its allocation to Teeg traffic, Mass Generator ouput, Heater propendancy (if necessary), and all other aspects of Lattice World power (including the continued operation of the Core computers).
- LWA Fleet Admiralty -- building and operating the millions of vessels (cargo, passenger, maintenance, etc.) that are necessary to keep the LWA operative. Most of the ships are assigned to "Off-Lattice" duties, moving between Lattice Worlds and natural planets.
- InfoTech Referential -- Compiling, parsing, interpreting, cataloguing, and advancing the computer-systemic and device-systemic aspects of the Lattice. (A great grudge is born by most InfoTech personnel for those aspects of the Lattice World computers that are kept secret from them by the TSC.)
- Off-Lattice Liaison Service -- Primarily a diplomatic section, through which the LWA negotiates business with non-Lattice governments.
There is, of course, one noteworthy exception to the underlying LWA heirarchy: though technically subordinate to the LWA, the TSC, which controls the Mass Generators, has traditionally enjoyed a high degree of immunity from both LWA mandates and whatever political concerns might insinuate their goals into LWA policies.
